What to Wear for Your Outdoor Photoshoot: Complete Styling Guide

Planning your portrait session, elopement, or family photoshoot in Fuerteventura or Lanzarote is exciting. These islands have amazing locations, from large white sand dunes to dark volcanic fields and beautiful beaches.

To help you look and feel great, here is an easy guide on what to wear for your outdoor shoot.

1. Choose the Right Colors

The colors of your clothes should look good with the natural background of your location.

  • Best Colors: Soft pastels (cream, beige, light blue, soft pink) and warm earth tones (terracotta, olive green, mustard yellow). These colors look beautiful in the island sun and against the volcanic rocks.
  • Colors to Avoid: Fluorescent or neon colors (like bright neon pink or green). They are too bright, distract from your face, and leave strange reflections on your skin.
  • No Big Logos: Try to avoid clothes with large brand logos or big words. Solid colors or simple textures look much cleaner.

2. Options for Group and Family Outfits

There is no single correct way to dress your family. You can choose between two popular styles:

  • The Coordinated Look: Pick a group of colors (like earth tones and neutrals). Then, let everyone choose different clothes within those colors. This looks natural and modern.
  • The Matching Look: Everyone wears a similar outfit, like classic white tops with jeans or neutral trousers. This looks very clean, looks great against the empty landscapes, and makes packing your bags simple.

3. Think About Texture and Movement

Outdoor photos look much better when your clothes can move with the nature around you.

  • Embrace the Wind: The beaches and sand dunes on the islands are often windy. Flowy maxi dresses, long skirts, or light shirts catch the wind perfectly and look amazing in photos.
  • Wear Layers: Bring a nice jacket, cardigan, or overshirt. Layers add depth to your photos and give you a quick second look without changing your whole outfit.

4. Practical Shoes for the Landscape

We will walk on soft sand, rocky paths, or uneven volcanic stone. Your footwear needs to be practical.

  • No High Heels: High heels or stiff dress shoes make it very hard to walk safely on the sand and rocks.
  • Best Options: Wear flat sandals, clean leather boots, or nice loafers. If we are shooting on the sand dunes or the beach, going barefoot is always a perfect option.

5. Bring a Warm Layer for Sunset

The weather in the Canary Islands can change very quickly when the sun goes down.

  • The Temperature Drop: Even if the day is very hot, it gets cold and windy the moment the sunset ends.
  • Be Prepared: Always bring a warm, stylish jacket or sweater to the shoot. This keeps you warm so you can enjoy the final minutes of the golden hour light.
